It was built around an earlier Queen Anne house and enlarged in 1912 by W.C. Mooney.","why_significant":"The house is nominated as the long-time home of William Crittenden Mooney (1855-1918), a leading Monroe County banker, railroad organizer, businessman and U.S. congressman. Architecturally, it is regarded as the local landmark and the finest Colonial Revival building in Woodsfield, where much of the central core has been altered.","narrative":"Known in Woodsfield as the Mooney Mansion, this large wood-frame house at 122 North Paul Street combines Colonial Revival design with the bones of an earlier Queen Anne residence that had a corner tower. In 1912 William C. Mooney enlarged the older house, adding a symmetrical five-bay facade, a two-story veranda and a colossal Ionic portico. Other features include a fanlight entrance, gable dormers, a dentiled cornice and a porte-cochere. Inside, a broad central stair hall has cherry treads and a walnut handrail, and a third-floor ballroom hosted community Christmas parties. The interior is little altered. Mooney (1855-1918) was a Monroe Bank officer, helped organize the Ohio River and Western Railroad, sat on several company boards, served on the commission for the new county courthouse after the 1906 fire, and was a congressman from 1915 to 1917. The house is regarded as the village's finest Colonial Revival building and a local landmark.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899, 1900- (specific dates 1880's, 1912)","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Colonial Revival (Georgian Revival), built around an earlier Queen Anne house","criteria":[],"status_note":"The form checks the property as occupied and in good condition, a private residence.
