It is also significant for its 19th century Italianate details, especially the interior woodwork with Eastlake motifs and a cherry staircase.","narrative":"Located at 124 West Main Street in Newark, this two-story, five-bay painted brick house rests on an 18-inch hammered sandstone foundation. It grew from an 1840 vernacular home, whose small rear portion, once servants' quarters, survives. In 1875 the McNamar family, who were machinists involved in steam engine manufacturing, rebuilt and enlarged it with Italianate features. These include an extended cornice of double brackets, stone bracketed lintels, lug sills and a double carved wood entrance. Inside are seven fireplaces with carved wood and slate mantels, heavily molded trim and a cherry staircase added in 1875. In 1911 Dr. Samuel D. McLure, a veterinarian turned physician, bought the property and added a small brick office wing for his practice. His daughter married into the family of William E. Miller, a U.S. Senator and champion of local education. The house was listed for its architecture, especially the interior, and for its ties to these prominent Newark families.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Italianate influence (with earlier 1840 vernacular portions)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as occupied and in use as a private residence; condition marked good and altered.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:12.608043-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/82003603.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71989700","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":null},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/licking-county/mcnamar-mclure-miller-residence-82003603/"}
