It is also one of the oldest residences in the downtown area. It was the home of Samuel Burdsal, a pioneer druggist and prominent local citizen.","narrative":"Built around 1834 at 1342 Broadway Street, this two-story brick house is a Federal-style dwelling that once stood on a wooded lot at the edge of Cincinnati. An 1885 newspaper account describes it as the first brick house on Broadway, one of the city's oldest streets. It has a stone foundation, a tin gabled roof, Flemish bond brickwork on the front, and a fanlight over the offset front door. Inside, much Federal detailing survives, including five fireplaces, chair rails, random-width pine floors and six-panel doors. Rooms were added to the rear in the 1860s. Samuel Burdsal lived here until 1888. He ran a drugstore across from the courthouse from 1832 until his death and was Cincinnati's oldest druggist, with William Henry Harrison among his acquaintances. The house is valued as one of the few surviving Federal buildings in Cincinnati and as a reminder of the city's early growth.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Federal","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Occupied as a private residence and undergoing restoration along Federal lines at the time of the nomination.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:12.331059-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/82003577.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82003577/f412af4d16-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82003577/f412af4d16-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 3.0","author":"Photo by Greg Hume (Greg5030)","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:SamuelBurdsalHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Photo by Greg Hume (Greg5030)</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:SamuelBurdsalHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71989123","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samuel_Burdsal_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7411013"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/hamilton-county/burdsal-samuel-house-82003577/"}
