It was built in 1843 by an unknown builder.","why_significant":"The nomination argues it is significant for religion and architecture. It was built by the conservative Hicksite group after a split over slavery and abolition, and it remains almost unchanged, with separate men's and women's sections. It is a vernacular Greek Revival expression of Quaker thought and also reflects the Quaker role in settling West Central Ohio.","narrative":"Green Plain Meeting House is a small brick Quaker meeting house on the South Charleston-Clifton Road in Madison Township, Clark County, Ohio. Built in 1843, it measures 22 by 42 feet and has six bays across the facade, with two doors and four windows. Inside, a walnut-paneled divider separated men from women, and the upper paneling could be folded back when the two groups needed to communicate. The meeting began in 1822 and divided in 1826 into orthodox and Hicksite groups. In 1843 the Hicksite branch split again over abolition, and the conservative group built this meeting house on the present site. The building is a plain, vernacular Greek Revival design in keeping with Friends tradition. Only the iron stoves and the rotted original floor were replaced, the latter with poured concrete around 1900. Original woodwork, sash, doors, transoms and shutters survive. A cemetery still in use occupies the back half of the one-acre lot.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899 (specific date 1843)","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Highly vernacularized Greek Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition listed as excellent and altered; status marked unoccupied.
