The church was built in 1853 around an earlier church of 1832-1836.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the complex is architecturally and religiously significant to Hamilton and southwestern Ohio. It was recognized as the first Catholic parish in Hamilton and was the third parish in the Cincinnati Archdiocese. It is described as the best example of Gothic church architecture in Hamilton, with a unified design despite being built in stages.","narrative":"St. Stephen Church and Rectory occupies a corner lot at 224 Dayton Street in Hamilton, Ohio. The present brick Gothic church was begun in 1853 around an earlier church from the 1830s, which was enclosed because its foundations could not support a larger building. Transepts added in 1893 extended the structure to its current size, and a limestone Late Gothic Revival facade designed by John Sheblessy of Cincinnati was dedicated in 1912. Inside, the carved wooden main altar of about 1868, vaulted ceilings, marble-style painted columns, a 1911 organ and art glass windows remain largely intact. A baptistry joins the church to the Italianate rectory, later faced in stone. The parish is recorded as the first Catholic parish in Hamilton and the third in the Cincinnati Archdiocese. Its steeple is a local landmark, and despite several building stages the church is judged the finest example of Gothic church architecture in the city.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":"A.
