Main Street in Wilkesboro, Wilkes County, North Carolina. The main block was built between 1855 and 1857 by merchant Stephen Johnson, and the ell was added in 1885 or shortly after.","why_significant":"The house is one of only a few buildings remaining from Wilkesboro's pre-Civil War years. It is a vernacular example of Greek Revival style with Gothic Revival touches in the entrance. Its painted marbling on mantels, baseboards, stair risers and ceilings is described as rare for the area. It has stayed in the same family throughout its history.","narrative":"Built between 1855 and 1857 for Stephen Johnson, a merchant and later county treasurer, this two-story frame house on East Main Street is among the few buildings in Wilkesboro that predate the Civil War. It has a center-hall plan, weatherboard siding, brick end chimneys stuccoed and penciled to imitate cut stone, and an entrance that blends Greek Revival and Gothic Revival motifs. Inside, flush-boarded walls and Greek Revival mantels and trim are complemented by painted marbling on mantels, baseboards, stair risers and two ceilings, where a lighted pine torch held to wet paint produced the effect. Johnson's niece Lula Hubbard and her husband Julius Cicero Hubbard bought the property in 1885 and added a one-story rear ell with a dining room and kitchen. The house stayed in the same family, and a fieldstone-based smokehouse survives from the original outbuildings. The marbling is regarded as a rare reminder of mid-nineteenth century decorative painting in the region.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":"Unknown (built by Stephen Johnson; ell added by Julius Cicero and Lula Hubbard)","architectural_style":"Greek Revival (vernacular), with Gothic Revival influence in the entrance","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Occupied as a private residence; the smokehouse is the only surviving outbuilding.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:58:56.727717-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/97/7186/47718697/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/82003527.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82003527/ac58e095ba-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82003527/ac58e095ba-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"G Keith Hall","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Johnson_Hubbard_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">G Keith Hall</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Johnson_Hubbard_House.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"09000290","name":"Downtown Wilkesboro Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/north-carolina/downtown-wilkesboro-historic-district-09000290/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47718697","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johnson-Hubbard_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q23073906"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/wilkes-county/johnson-hubbard-house-82003527/"}
