It has a T-shaped plan and a smokehouse among its outbuildings.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is one of the finest remaining examples in Iredell County of the late Greek Revival style in Piedmont domestic architecture. Its sophisticated design, consistent interior and exterior detailing, two-story portico, and rare use of Venetian glass are cited as evidence of mid-nineteenth-century building quality, and it is described as well preserved and largely unaltered.","narrative":"Built around 1860 for cotton planter and merchant John Hargrave, this two-story frame house near the Rowan County line in Iredell County is a late Greek Revival example in Piedmont plantation architecture. Its T-shaped plan has a two-story center-bay portico supported by pairs of Doric columns, and its double-leaf front doorways are framed with red Venetian glass in a Greek floral pattern, regarded as the only known example of Venetian glass in the county. Molded 6/6 sash windows, heavily pedimented side gables, and Greek mantels run throughout, with interior trim repeating the exterior molding. Carpenter John McKnight, Hargrave's cousin, built the house, and McKnight is also credited with the nearby Prospect Presbyterian Church. The house is considered more refined than the related Henry Eccles and Henry Turner houses in Cool Spring. It has remained largely unchanged, with a smokehouse still retaining its original louvered ventilators.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"John McKnight (carpenter/builder)","architectural_style":"Late Greek Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Well preserved and largely unaltered; the land remains in active agricultural use.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-haiku-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.1-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 17:11:41.396546-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/47/7180/47718047/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/82003473.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82003473/436a8758fa-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82003473/436a8758fa-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Ncpappy","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:2012-09-24_17-03-23_604_Carrigan_Farm_aka_Hargrave_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Ncpappy</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:2012-09-24_17-03-23_604_Carrigan_Farm_aka_Hargrave_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47718047","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hargrave_House_(Statesville,_North_Carolina)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q19462185"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/iredell-county/hargrave-house-82003473/"}
