Mitchell House, is a three-story frame Queen Anne house with a shingled corner tower at Main and Wynn streets in Winton, Hertford County, North Carolina, built around 1899 for James Saunders Mitchell, II.","why_significant":"It is described as the best example of Queen Anne architecture surviving in Winton and one of a few fine buildings of its era in the county. It is also associated with Mitchell, a locally prominent planter, merchant, sheriff and politician. Family tradition, though undocumented, credits Samuel Sloan as designer.","narrative":"Built around 1899 on Main Street in Winton, Hertford County, Gray Gables is a three-story frame house in the Queen Anne style. Its irregular massing, eight-sided conical tower with a shingled third story, and wraparound porch with turned posts, carved brackets and spindle frieze make it a local landmark, sometimes called the castle by townspeople. Inside, a center hall features a carved spindle screen, paneled wainscot, stained glass and tulip-shaped newel posts. James Saunders Mitchell, II, a grocer, planter and county sheriff who later joined the Populist Party, had it built using trim ordered from a manufacturer in Edenton. Family tradition credits architect Samuel Sloan, though this is undocumented. Because Winton was burned during the Civil War, the house is one of the oldest surviving in town and reflects the post-war fortunes of planter families. It is considered the best Queen Anne example in Winton.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":"Unknown (built by James Saunders Mitchell, II; design traditionally attributed to Samuel Sloan, undocumented)","architectural_style":"Queen Anne","criteria":["B","C"],"status_note":"Condition listed as excellent; the form marks it as a private residence, occupied during summer.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:58:58.460886-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/53/7208/47720853/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/82003470.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82003470/6006e87299-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82003470/6006e87299-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"DaveEM1004","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Gray_Gables_NW.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">DaveEM1004</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Gray_Gables_NW.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47720853","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gray_Gables_(Winton,_North_Carolina)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q19462063"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/hertford-county/gray-gables-82003470/"}
