It was built in the late 1840s by Samuel Warren Branch.","why_significant":"The house is an unusually intact, late example of the Federal-style tripartite houses favored by the Halifax-Warren planter class. The attached Georgian house is a well-preserved example of its type. It is tied to the prominent Branch and Parker families, and archaeological testing could yield information on nineteenth-century farm life.","narrative":"Branch Grove is a plantation house near Enfield in Halifax County, built in the late 1840s by planter Samuel Warren Branch. It is a two-story, three-part Federal-style house with a pedimented central block and one-story wings, and an earlier Georgian-style house is attached at the rear. An 1849 insurance application documents the house as newly built. The woodwork is fine, including sunburst and scalloped mantels, and the exterior details suggest some awareness of Greek Revival fashion. Branch, father of the founder of Branch Banking and Trust, lost his fortune through Confederate investments, and the plantation was sold at auction in 1866 to James Harvey Parker. The Parker family has held it since, and it remains in agricultural use. It is significant as a late member of the tripartite house group concentrated in Halifax and Warren counties, for its Georgian house, and for its family associations.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":"Samuel Warren Branch (builder of the house; the form lists the builder/architect as unknown)","architectural_style":"Federal-style tripartite house with attached earlier Georgian-style house","criteria":["A","B","C","D"],"status_note":"Occupied, in private residential and agricultural use; condition listed as good and unaltered on its original site.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:58:57.521551-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/70/7206/47720670/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/82003464.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82003464/9f864bd71f-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82003464/9f864bd71f-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Surfdog1993","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Sam_branch.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Surfdog1993</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Sam_branch.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47720670","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samuel_Warren_Branch_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q18711536"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/halifax-county/branch-samuel-warren-house-82003464/"}
