It began as a one-room log structure of probably early nineteenth century date and received a frame addition in the 1820s or 1830s.","why_significant":"The house typifies the substantial but unpretentious dwelling of an average antebellum planter in the western North Carolina Piedmont. It remained in one locally prominent farming family throughout its existence and is described as one of the least altered early nineteenth century houses in the region. The surrounding land may also hold archaeological information about the early farmstead.","narrative":"Set on a quiet rural road in northwest Cleveland County, this farmhouse grew in stages from a one-room, half-dovetailed log dwelling into a weatherboarded house with a frame addition, a full-length front porch with enclosed ends, and rear shed rooms. The log core is probably early nineteenth century, and the frame portion dates to the 1820s or 1830s. John Lattimore, known as Big John, lived there for about fifty years and enlarged it as his family grew to at least eleven children. He became a moderately wealthy planter, growing grain, cotton and tobacco, though the Civil War cost him much of his wealth and labor. The house stayed in the Lattimore family, and a family cemetery lies nearby. It was listed for its link to the agrarian society of the western Piedmont, its family associations, its largely unaltered form, and its archaeological potential. Weathering has taken a toll, but the owners have stabilized the structure.","period_of_significance":"Early nineteenth century (1800-1899)","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Vernacular, with simple Federal style details","criteria":["A","B","C","D"],"status_note":"Badly weathered and deteriorated, but stabilized by the family; described as having stood vacant for many years.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:58:57.87912-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/40/7196/47719640/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/82003445.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82003445/b23071e7b8-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82003445/b23071e7b8-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Rkershenbaum","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:John_Lattimore_House,_Polkville,_North_Carolina_USA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Rkershenbaum</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:John_Lattimore_House,_Polkville,_North_Carolina_USA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47719640","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Lattimore_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q18153446"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/cleveland-county/lattimore-john-house-82003445/"}
