The largely unaltered studio still holds many of his drawings, tools, photographs and plaster models. The nomination also notes its restrained classical detailing in an unusual concrete block construction.","narrative":"Built in 1908 by a Mr. Bertelli of the Roman Bronze Company, this White Plains building combined living quarters and a large sculpture studio on one landscaped acre. Its walls are concrete block faced with stucco, with a copper gable roof, a long bank of north skylights, and classical touches such as quoins, a string course and projecting window moldings. Oversized doors allowed large sculptures to be moved out. Three notable sculptors worked here: Harry Merwin Shrady, Karl Illava, and later Leo Friedlander (1890-1966). Friedlander moved in during the 1930s, reinforced the studio floor, taught classes, and created works including the Arlington Memorial Bridge equestrian groups, relief panels at the RCA Building, and figures for the 1939 World's Fair. Drawings, tools, photographs and plaster models remain in the studio, which has changed little and is still occupied by the family.","period_of_significance":"1908","architect_builder":"Bertelli, Roman Bronze Company","architectural_style":"Classically inspired, with restrained classical details","criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as in good condition, largely unaltered, occupied and cared for by the artist's family, with the studio maintained much as when Friedlander worked there.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:42.462143-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/82003416.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82003416/b9533ed546-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82003416/b9533ed546-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:HartsdaleNY_LeoFriedlanderStudio.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:HartsdaleNY_LeoFriedlanderStudio.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75323035","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leo_Friedlander_Studio","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6523746"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/westchester-county/friedlander-leo-studio-82003416/"}
