It contains 83 structures, mostly nineteenth-century brick stores, along with churches, a post office and barns.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the district has both historical and architectural significance. Its buildings from many periods record nineteenth-century building styles and reflect the commercial and social changes of upper Hudson Valley communities. Notable features include two complete Mesker Brothers iron fronts, Romanesque Revival churches, late Victorian dated pediments and historic bluestone sidewalks.","narrative":"Saugerties' historic business core lies along Main, Partition, Market and Jane Streets, where 83 structures form a compact, small-scale commercial district above the mouth of the Esopus Creek. Most are two- or three-story brick stores with apartments or storage above, built mainly in the second half of the nineteenth century. The village grew from a small mill hamlet after businessman Henry Barclay established an iron works and paper mill in the 1820s, and later relied on bluestone shipping, brickmaking and tourism. Surviving landmarks include a 1780s public house, the 1827 Phoenix Hotel, the Exchange Hotel, and two churches in round-arched styles. Two storefronts have complete galvanized sheet-iron facades shipped from Mesker Brothers of St. Louis, and several Victorian buildings carry named, dated rooftop pediments. Bluestone sidewalks remain in front of most shops. Limited twentieth-century growth left few modern intrusions, so the streetscape still conveys a nineteenth-century riverside village.","period_of_significance":"c1780-1900","architect_builder":"Various","architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as in excellent to good condition, with some altered storefronts, few modern intrusions, and an intact core of the nineteenth-century business district. Present uses include commercial, private residence, religious and government.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:43.265377-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/82003411.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82003411/8af4b0f098-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82003411/8af4b0f098-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 2.0","author":"Doug Kerr from Upstate New York","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Main-Partition_Streets_Historic_District_Apr_09.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Doug Kerr from Upstate New York</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 2.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Main-Partition_Streets_Historic_District_Apr_09.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75322673","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main%E2%80%93Partition_Streets_Historic_District","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6736855"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/ulster-county/main-partition-streets-historic-district-82003411/"}
