It is an especially fine example of Parisian Beaux-Arts design, a style popular for fashionable residences at the turn of the century. It also reflects Murray Hill's continued status as a fashionable residential area.","narrative":"Built in 1901-03 on East 35th Street in Manhattan's Murray Hill, this five-story townhouse replaced two 1854 brownstones that banker James F.D. Lanier purchased in 1901. At 33 feet wide, it fills nearly its whole lot. A rusticated stone base with three arched openings supports a red brick facade framed by two-story fluted stone pilasters with Ionic capitals, swags, a bracketed cornice, a wrought-iron balustrade and a copper mansard roof with three pedimented dormers. Interior features inspired by French design remain largely intact. The architects, Francis L.V. Hoppin and Terence A. Koen, trained with McKim, Mead & White, and Hoppin also studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Their firm is best known for the New York City Police Headquarters. The Lanier house is regarded as one of its finest residences and an especially fine example of Parisian Beaux-Arts design, which was popular for fashionable homes at the turn of the century. It remains an occupied private residence.","period_of_significance":"1901-03","architect_builder":"Hoppin & Koen","architectural_style":"Beaux-Arts","criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as in excellent condition, unaltered, on its original site, and occupied as a private residence.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:43.365926-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/82003383.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82003383/2354f04b43-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82003383/2354f04b43-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Beyond My Ken","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Lanier_House_123_East_35th_Street.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Beyond My Ken</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Lanier_House_123_East_35th_Street.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75319678","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_F._D._Lanier_Residence","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6133625"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/manhattan/lanier-james-f-d-residence-82003383/"}
