Its design draws on the Palazzo Canossa in Verona, freely adapted with details from other palazzi. It still serves its original function as a club.","narrative":"Set among taller office towers in midtown Manhattan, this four-story clubhouse at 5-7 West 43rd Street was built in 1889-1891 for the Century Association and designed by McKim, Mead & White. Its flat facade of granite, terra-cotta and brick is organized around a massive central arch holding the main entrance, with a palladian window above that was originally an open loggia. Rusticated lower floors give way to richly decorated upper stories with fluted pilasters, a full entablature and a stone balustrade. The building was the firm's first New York clubhouse executed completely in the Italian Renaissance manner, drawing partly on the Palazzo Canossa in Verona. Its design has long been credited to Stanford White, though recent evidence suggests Joseph M. Wells worked out most of the arrangement and details under White's direction. The association, founded in 1847 to advance art and literature, still occupies the building as a private club, which marks the start of the firm's many later clubhouses.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":"McKim, Mead & White","architectural_style":"Italian Renaissance","criteria":[],"status_note":"Occupied and still used as a private club, its original function; condition listed as excellent and altered.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:42.998665-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/82003369.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82003369/8212873c1d-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82003369/8212873c1d-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Beyond My Ken","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Century_Association_7_West_43rd_Street.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Beyond My Ken</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Century_Association_7_West_43rd_Street.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75319358","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q110931549"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/manhattan/century-association-building-82003369/"}
