Continuity of tradition under successive owners kept the Lincrusta-Walton wall coverings, mirrors, paneling, bar, mahogany tables and combination gas-electric fixtures intact. Both the building and its interior are designated New York City Landmarks.","narrative":"Gage & Tollner occupies a four-story building at 372 Fulton Street in downtown Brooklyn. The structure dates from the mid-1870s and is basically late Italianate, with a high painted wooden neo-Grec storefront probably added in 1892 when the restaurant opened there. Inside, a long, narrow dining room about 25 by 90 feet seats roughly 150 and is lined with tall arched mirrors framed in dark red cherry wood, with panels of patterned cut-velvet between them. Lincrusta-Walton wall covering, made to resemble embossed leather, decorates the walls and ceiling bays. The original mahogany tables and brass combination gas-electric fixtures, installed in 1888, survive. Charles Gage opened the business at 302 Fulton Street in 1879, Eugene Tollner joined him in 1884, and the restaurant moved to its present address in 1889. When the founders retired in 1911, the buyers agreed to keep its customs, a condition later owners accepted. That continuity preserved one of the few intact Victorian interiors in New York City.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Late Italianate, with a neo-Grec painted wooden storefront","criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition listed as excellent and altered; the restaurant retains its Victorian interior and the building occupies its entire nominated site.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:41.899773-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/82003362.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82003362/888e4e5274-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82003362/888e4e5274-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 2.0","author":"Steven J from New York City, USA","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Fulton_St.,_Gage_%26_Tollner_restaurant,_1987_(7998320161).jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Steven J from New York City, USA</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 2.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Fulton_St.,_Gage_%26_Tollner_restaurant,_1987_(7998320161).jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75318401","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gage_and_Tollner","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5516849"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/brooklyn/gage-and-tollner-restaurant-82003362/"}
