Tubby.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the building is a particularly fine and impressive example of late Romanesque Revival municipal architecture. Its fortress-like design expresses the station's role in the community and contrasts with the surrounding modest tenements. It is also the only known police station designed by Tubby, a prominent Brooklyn architect.","narrative":"Built in 1894-95 as the 20th Precinct Station House, this police station and its attached stable occupy a full lot at Wilson and DeKalb Avenues in Brooklyn's Bushwick neighborhood. Architect William B. Tubby gave the three-story building polychromatic brickwork in red, yellow and ochre, a crenelated corner tower with a cone-shaped roof, and a limestone entrance portico with four columns and the seal of the city of Brooklyn. A one-story cell block links the station to a small stable, a common feature of police stations of the period. The fortress-like Romanesque Revival design reflected a popular idea of the station house as a stronghold defending its neighborhood, and it contrasted with the plain tenements nearby. The building later became the 64th Precinct and, in 1929, the 83rd. It is Tubby's only known police station and remains in use by the police department. Its architectural quality and its place in his career formed the basis for listing.","period_of_significance":"1894-95","architect_builder":"William B Tubby","architectural_style":"Late Romanesque Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Occupied and still used by the New York City Police Department; the clock once set in the tower has been removed.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:42.920157-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/82003360.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82003360/30b748a717-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82003360/30b748a717-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Jim.henderson","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:BPD_20th_Pct_Wilson_Kalb_jeh.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Jim.henderson</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:BPD_20th_Pct_Wilson_Kalb_jeh.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75318305","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/83rd_Precinct_Police_Station","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4644731"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/brooklyn/83rd-precinct-police-station-and-stable-82003360/"}
