It is noted for exceptionally fine architectural details within the Hudson Valley vernacular tradition. It also reflects the social prominence of the Tabor and Wing families, who were pioneer families of Dover Plains.","narrative":"Built about 1810 by Thomas Tabor, this frame house in Dover Plains, Dutchess County, combines a two-story, five-bay main block with a plainer kitchen wing at the rear. The clapboard main block has a central entrance with sidelights, a leaded-glass transom, fluted pilasters and a pedimented porch, topped by a tripartite window. Window lintels echo the doorway details, and the interior is arranged around a central hall with restrained moldings, plastered walls and a large cooking fireplace with a bake oven in the wing. Tabor's father arrived from Rhode Island in 1748 and owned the land where the village now stands. Tabor's daughter Sally married Mahlon Wing, and the Wings lived in the house from 1839 until 1926. Long family ownership left the house with few alterations, making it a rare survivor among early frame buildings. Its refined detailing within a rural vernacular tradition reflects the values of early nineteenth-century Dutchess County society. Today the library and the historical society share the building.","period_of_significance":"c.1810","architect_builder":"Builder: Thomas Tabor (architect unknown)","architectural_style":"Federal period, regional Hudson Valley vernacular","criteria":[],"status_note":"Occupied in part by the Town of Dover Public Library, with the Dover Historical Society restoring the rest of the structure.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:43.116867-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/82003355.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82003355/f26ddd7b08-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82003355/f26ddd7b08-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Daniel Case","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Tabor-Wing_House,_Dover_Plains,_NY.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniel Case</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Tabor-Wing_House,_Dover_Plains,_NY.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75317490","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tabor-Wing_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q1167394"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/dutchess-county/tabor-wing-house-82003355/"}
