It is adorned with a sculpted figure of Justice by J.E. Roine. Its architect, Michael J. Garvin, was a local figure who served as the Bronx's first commissioner of buildings.","narrative":"Occupying a full five-sided block in the commercial southeast Bronx, this four-story granite courthouse was built between 1905 and 1915 to designs by local architect Michael J. Garvin. Its two-story rusticated base, double-height arched entrances, two-story pilasters, and encircling entablature follow the Beaux-Arts tradition common in civic architecture of the period. A Tennessee marble figure of Justice, carved by J.E. Roine, stands before the central window on the East 161st Street front. The building was meant to house municipal and magistrate's courts and the coroner's office, but construction dragged on for ten years amid controversy and charges of corruption. During that time the Bronx became its own county, so the courthouse also took in the Supreme, Surrogate's and County Courts. It opened in January 1914 with the interior still unfinished. After a new county courthouse was completed in 1934, it served as the Bronx branch of the city's Criminal Court until 1977 and has been vacant since 1978.","period_of_significance":"1905-15","architect_builder":"Michael J.
