It has an L-shaped plan with a 2 1/2-story main block and a 2-story rear wing and addition.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is significant for its architectural style, rarity, age and the prominence of one owner. It is probably the oldest remaining single-family dwelling in Peoria's Original Town and a fine example of Greek Revival design that kept its original form. Judge Jacob Gale, its owner, served as circuit clerk, circuit judge, mayor, city councilman and superintendent of public schools.","narrative":"Built around 1839-40 at 403 NE Jefferson Street, this Greek Revival house is probably the oldest surviving single-family dwelling in the Original Town of Peoria. It is an L-shaped brick building with a 2 1/2-story main block, a five-bay facade, a modillion cornice, and stone lintels and sills. A porch with paired fluted Ionic columns was added between about 1840 and 1860. Inside, a central hall has two rooms on each side, and part of the original staircase survives. Its exterior looks much as it did when built, though the interior was subdivided when it became a rooming house around the First World War. The house is also tied to Judge Jacob Gale, who served as circuit clerk, circuit judge, twice as mayor, city councilman and superintendent of public schools, and later worked for the Peoria Light, Gas and Coke Company. The nomination states that no other home of this period in Peoria survives in as good condition.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as deteriorated and altered, unoccupied and vacant; it served as a rooming house from around the First World War, and interior partitions were slated for removal.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:34.509889-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/27/8938/28893827/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_IL/82002591.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82002591/5dd8552a64-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82002591/5dd8552a64-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Mmikhailova","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Judge_Jacob_Gale_House.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Mmikhailova</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Judge_Jacob_Gale_House.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/28893827","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Judge_Jacob_Gale_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6302561"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/illinois/peoria-county/gale-judge-jacob-house-82002591/"}
