Its second major facade, added about 1874 with Gothic Revival ornament, further enhances its significance. It is also the only Greek Revival structure in McHenry included in the Illinois Historic Structures Survey.","narrative":"Known locally as the Count's House, this brick residence on Waukegan Road in McHenry, Illinois, dates to about 1860. It is a two-story Greek Revival building with a full basement on a fieldstone foundation, brick corner pilasters, an end-gable pediment on Doric columns, and a full entablature. A brick summer kitchen is attached on the east. Around 1874 the south facade was reworked as a second main front in Gothic Revival style, with drip moldings, brackets and a second-story porch. The land was first held by George Gage, later a state senator; Mary Melindy likely built the house after buying the lot in 1859. The nickname comes from Count Oscar Bopp Von Oberstadt, who emigrated from Germany in 1916, bought the house in 1920 and lived there until 1927. Despite changes to the summer kitchen, the house retains a high degree of integrity and is the only Greek Revival structure in McHenry in the state historic structures survey.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Greek Revival, with Gothic Revival south facade","criteria":[],"status_note":"Occupied as a private residence; the form lists its condition as original site and notes 20th-century modifications to the summer kitchen.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:34.908047-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/24/8936/28893624/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_IL/82002587.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82002587/84bba1c8ad-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82002587/84bba1c8ad-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 2.5","author":"IvoShandor","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:McHenry_Il_Count%27s_House1.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">IvoShandor</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.5\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 2.5</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:McHenry_Il_Count%27s_House1.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/28893624","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Count%27s_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5176630"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/illinois/mchenry-county/counts-house-82002587/"}
