It is described as an excellent example, and the only Illinois example, of his pre-World War II Usonian residential designs. It is also an early, intact example of the housing type, although it was less than 50 years old at the time of nomination.","narrative":"Set on a densely wooded lot on the east bank of the Des Plaines River in Libertyville, this 1939 house was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright for Lloyd Lewis, a Chicago Daily News columnist and author of Civil War histories. It follows Wright's Usonian approach: common brick service cores and piers, cypress board-and-batten walls, radiant floor heating, recessed lighting and built-in furniture. The main body rests on brick piers, with an open loggia, carport and two bedrooms at ground level. Above, changes in floor level define the living, dining and study areas within an open plan. Between 1936 and 1942 Wright designed many Usonian houses, but only 25 were built, and this is the only one from the period in Illinois. Compared with the typical Usonian, it is a somewhat more luxurious version, with space for large gatherings and a servant's room. It was listed as an early, intact example by a master architect.","period_of_significance":"1939","architect_builder":"Frank Lloyd Wright","architectural_style":"Usonian (Frank Lloyd Wright)","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Listed as occupied, in good condition, unaltered and on its original site; used as a private residence.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:35.508946-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/28/8933/28893328/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_IL/82002579.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82002579/f0513a27e7-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82002579/f0513a27e7-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Shmcnulty","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:FLW-lloydlewishouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Shmcnulty</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:FLW-lloydlewishouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/28893328","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lloyd_Lewis_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6662581"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/illinois/lake-county/lewis-lloyd-house-82002579/"}
