Its small scale and combined brick and river stone construction set it apart from similarly styled local houses. It also represents the work of a local craftsman-builder and is part of the fabric of the oldest part of town.","narrative":"Built between 1853 and 1855 on a hill overlooking the Fox River, this small Greek Revival cottage in St. Charles combines a two-story red brick front section with a one-story riverstone rear wing. Its doors and windows have stone lintels and sills, and the foundation and basement are riverstone. The builder, Andrew Weisel, was a German-born mason who came to St. Charles in 1846 and married Isabella Beith, sister of the prolific contractor William Beith. He lived in the house until 1867, when he bought a farm across the river. Later changes include enclosing the south porch, enlarging an east window, removing some interior partitions, and laying oak flooring over the original pine. The front entry has been restored with its original sidelights and transom, and the stair, two-panel doors and trim survive. The house is valued as one of few remaining Greek Revival homes of its decade in the city and as an example of local masonry craftsmanship.","period_of_significance":"1853-1855","architect_builder":"Andrew Weisel","architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Occupied as a private residence, in excellent condition, with some alterations.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:34.981677-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/12/8931/28893112/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_IL/82002550.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82002550/f47bf6d885-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82002550/f47bf6d885-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"G LeTourneau","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Andrew_Weisel_House_(St._Charles,_IL)_05.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">G LeTourneau</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Andrew_Weisel_House_(St._Charles,_IL)_05.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/28893112","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrew_Weisel_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4758869"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/illinois/kane-county/weisel-andrew-house-82002550/"}
