It is a private residence.","why_significant":"The house is presented as a fine example of early Italianate design and as a lasting expression of Olof Johnson's importance in Bishop Hill Colony and Galva. Johnson handled the colony's business affairs and helped name Galva. The house is thought to be the only recognizable standing home of a Senior Bishop Hill Trustee.","narrative":"Built in 1863, this Italianate house at 408 N.W. 4th Street in Galva was home to Olof Johnson, a Swedish immigrant and one of the trustees of the Bishop Hill Colony. The exterior is symmetrical and blocky, with doubled brackets under the cornices, a deep encircling porch with slender columns, and heavy window and door surrounds. Inside, the parlor and formal dining room have marble and cast-metal fireplaces and decorative ceiling medallions, and a front stair has a stained wood balustrade. Heavy summer beams rest on stone piers in the basement. Johnson managed the colony's dealings with the outside world, helped lead the division of its holdings after 1860, and is credited with naming the settlement that became Galva. His estate became a major Illinois court case. The house reflects the wealth he built through investments and travel, and it is thought to be the only recognizable surviving home of a senior Bishop Hill trustee.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Italianate (Victorian period, 1860-1900)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Occupied private residence in excellent condition, altered; a second-floor apartment was added and two front doors created.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:34.386764-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/76/8929/28892976/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_IL/82002539.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82002539/03f1233081-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82002539/03f1233081-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Boscophotos","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Image_Johnson_House.jpeg\" rel=\"noopener\">Boscophotos</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Image_Johnson_House.jpeg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/28892976","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Olof_Johnson_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q24061816"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/illinois/henry-county/johnson-olof-house-82002539/"}
