It is rectangular, 62 by 42 feet, topped by a sixteen-windowed cupola.","why_significant":"It is the oldest house standing in Austin and one of the few Chicago buildings predating the 1871 Great Chicago Fire. As Austin's first fine residence, it helped draw other city dwellers to the suburb. It also served for decades as a music and arts center and was the home of early Chicago businessman Seth P. Warner.","narrative":"Built in 1869 at 631 North Central Avenue, this two-story brick house is the oldest standing house in Chicago's Austin community. Seth Porter Warner, a blacksmith turned businessman who arrived in Chicago in 1837, had it built on a square block of prairie land in what was then a village. The Tuscan Villa Italianate design features a cupola, arched windows with sandstone heads, a bracketed wooden cornice, black walnut woodwork and six Italian marble fireplaces. Early twentieth-century changes raised the roof for a ballroom and divided the cupola; a 1981 restoration reversed that work. Warner's home was Austin's first fine residence and encouraged others to move from the city. From 1924 to 1979 it housed music schools and the Austin Academy of Fine Arts, a cultural center on the West Side. It is also one of few Chicago buildings that predate the 1871 fire.","period_of_significance":"1869","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Tuscan Villa Italianate","criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as in excellent condition and occupied as a private residence; the roof was restored in 1981 to its original Italianate form.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:35.443125-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/4/8924/28892404/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_IL/82002531.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82002531/5eaab6e267-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82002531/5eaab6e267-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Thshriver","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Warner,_Seth_House_1_crop.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Thshriver</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Warner,_Seth_House_1_crop.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/28892404","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seth_Warner_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q55632915"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/illinois/cook-county/warner-seth-house-82002531/"}
