Builder and architect are unknown.","why_significant":"The nomination finds it significant in architecture as a good example of a late-nineteenth-century commercial hotel and small-town Victorian commercial architecture. It is also a local landmark, one of Monroe's first major brick buildings, and its only surviving historic hotel. In commerce, it was Monroe's principal hotel from 1886 to 1919 and a catalyst for economic development.","narrative":"Rising three stories beside the courthouse square in downtown Monroe, this brick Victorian building was constructed between 1881 and 1886 as the Walton Hotel. Four small stores occupy the ground floor, while hotel rooms fill the upper levels along central hallways. Exterior features include segmentally arched windows, brick corbeling, a modillioned sheet metal cornice and a decorative parapet bearing the hotel's name. Inside, carved and turned stair woodwork, plaster walls and shallow fireplaces survive. The hotel served as Monroe's principal lodging from 1886 until 1919, when a newer hotel opened and it closed. It hosted traveling salesmen, businessmen and courthouse visitors, and was described locally in 1891 as the finest hotel between Atlanta and Augusta. It is the town's only surviving historic hotel and its only historic three-story brick structure, and its upper floors remain largely intact in a downtown where many older commercial buildings have been updated.","period_of_significance":"1881-1886","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Victorian","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Condition rated fair. Stores on the ground floor are occupied; the upper hotel floors have been vacant since 1919 except for a few rooms used as offices, and are in poor condition.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:40.620584-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/82002495.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"83003619","name":"Monroe Commercial Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/georgia/monroe-commercial-historic-district-83003619/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93209849","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q134466059"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/walton-county/walton-hotel-82002495/"}
