It also housed a succession of general merchandise stores from 1906 until about 1960 that anchored downtown business.","narrative":"Built in 1906 at the corner of East Railroad and Brayton Streets, this two-story commercial building anchors one end of a row of early to mid-twentieth century storefronts in downtown Ochlocknee, Georgia. Its load-bearing walls are made of smooth-faced, bevel-edged concrete block, a material introduced in American architecture around the turn of the century. The cast iron storefront framing, hand-run freight elevator, plank floors, tongue-and-groove ceilings and a balustraded atrium open to the floor below survive inside and out. It is the only two-story commercial structure in town. The building housed general merchandise stores from 1906 until about 1960, beginning with D.B. Anderson and his partner, followed by the Mutual Trading Company and then the Segler family's five-and-ten-cent store. Part of the second floor held a telephone exchange from the late 1920s. Its orientation toward the railroad tracks reflects the town's ties to the railroad. It was listed for its commercial and architectural importance.","period_of_significance":"1900-","architect_builder":"Unknown (built by D.B.
