Grier as both home and doctor's office.","why_significant":"The house is presented as a locally significant example of Late Victorian Eclectic architecture, rare in Lumpkin for its asymmetrical plan and central pavilion. It is also tied to local history as the home and office of a leading physician and an example of upper-class housing in the early 20th century.","narrative":"Built in 1910, this one-story house on Broad Street in Lumpkin served as both the home and medical office of Dr. R.L. Grier. He bought the lot in February of that year and had the house and a barn finished by June. Grier had come to Lumpkin in the late 1880s after practicing in the Pumpkin Creek community of Randolph County, and he played in the Lumpkin Brass Band. His wife was known for her beauty and for performing operettas at the Lumpkin Opera House. The frame house has weatherboard siding, a hip and gable roof, a central projecting pavilion flanked by shed porches with turned posts, and a Greek Revival style entrance on the east. The west wing housed the doctor's office. Its asymmetrical plan and central pavilion are unusual in Lumpkin, and the house reflects the type of housing favored by the town's upper class early in the twentieth century.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Late Victorian Eclectic","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as a residence; alterations include rear shed additions around 1940 and a carport added to the east side in the 1950s.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:40.111421-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/82002470.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93206582","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q134457241"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/stewart-county/grier-dr-r-l-house-82002470/"}
