It is cited as a good example of a modest interpretation of the prevailing architectural styles of the early 19th century. It also represents the modest housing of less affluent members of Lumpkin's 19th-century merchant class.","narrative":"Built in 1840, this one-story Greek Revival house sits at Broad and Elm Streets in Lumpkin, Georgia, northeast of the town square. It has a rectangular plan, a gable roof with boxed cornice and returns, weatherboard siding over mortise-and-tenon construction, and two interior stuccoed chimneys. The five-bay front facade has a central entrance with sidelights set off by fluted pilasters, and the corners carry pilasters. Inside, a central hall divides four rooms. Later changes include replacement windows, a concrete porch base with a metal awning, a rear shed addition from about 1960 with a garage, and a tool shed from about 1970. Little is known of its early years. In the late nineteenth century it was the home of Holcum Wade, the town candy maker, and by 1904 it belonged to David Hobbs, who bought it from drugstore owner A.H. Simpson. It is valued as the last early house on East Broad Street and as an example of modest merchant-class housing.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Currently used as a residence; described as in good condition.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:40.651004-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/82002466.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82002466/295adbc9b8-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82002466/295adbc9b8-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"LittleT889","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Armstrong_House_(Lumpkin,_Georgia).jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">LittleT889</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Armstrong_House_(Lumpkin,_Georgia).jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93206574","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Armstrong_House_(Lumpkin,_Georgia)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q65064272"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/stewart-county/armstrong-house-82002466/"}
