It began as an L-shaped plan with a central hall and was enlarged around 1895, in 1920 and in 1925 until it became square. Its first owner, Professor Fletcher Hamilton Henderson, moved to Cuthbert in 1880 and led the Howard Normal School, the foundation of black education in the town, until 1942, a span of 64 years. He lived in the house until his death in 1943. His sons Fletcher Jr. and Horace grew up there and took early music lessons. Fletcher Jr. became a leading jazz bandleader and arranger in New York, and Horace became a bandleader and arranger who worked with major orchestras. The house is recognized for these links to local education and American jazz.","period_of_significance":"1888","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Victorian","criteria":["A","B"],"status_note":"Described as in good condition and occupied as a private residence, with additions made in c. 1895, 1920 and 1925.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:40.206929-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/82002460.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82002460/20747bef9e-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82002460/20747bef9e-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Rivers Langley; SaveRivers","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Fletcher_Henderson_House;_Cuthbert,_GA_(NRHP).JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Rivers Langley; SaveRivers</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Fletcher_Henderson_House;_Cuthbert,_GA_(NRHP).JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93209331","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fletcher_Henderson_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q29095219"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/randolph-county/henderson-fletcher-house-82002460/"}
