It served the 3rd Ward of Gainesville as a public elementary school for 67 years and is the city's only surviving early twentieth century public school building. It was built before the post-World War One school building boom and without state funding.","narrative":"Candler Street School is a two-story, symmetrical brick building in the Georgian Revival style, completed in 1911 in a residential neighborhood of Gainesville, Georgia. It has a hipped roof, wide eaves, projecting front and rear bays, and a flat-roofed entrance portico on brick piers. Inside, a central hall divides four classrooms on each of the main and second floors. The Cunningham Brothers of Greenville, South Carolina, designed it, and Loden and Prater of Gainesville built it on a lot the city bought in 1910. It served as a neighborhood elementary school for 67 years, until 1978. The building is considered significant as a good example of an early twentieth century school and for its adaptation of nearby residential designs to an institutional use. It predates the larger school construction of the 1920s and is the only public school building of its era still standing in the community. Exterior alterations are few, and interior changes are mostly cosmetic.","period_of_significance":"1911","architect_builder":"Architect: Cunningham Brothers of Greenville, SC; Builder: Loden and Prater of Gainesville, Georgia","architectural_style":"Georgian Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Vacant since the school closed in June 1978; the form notes it was being renovated into offices following rehabilitation standards.
