It is also significant for commerce and communications as the early 20th century home of M.C. York, a dry goods merchant who founded the Standard Telephone Company in 1904.","narrative":"Built between 1861 and 1863 on Bridge Street in Clarkesville, this L-shaped Greek Revival house has a central hall plan with a two-story recessed porch, square hand-fluted columns, a hipped roof, and a cantilevered balcony with delicate cutwork in its balustrade. Inside are a bracketed staircase, carved mantels, and relatively low ceilings. The house is believed to have been designed and built by its first owner, Porter, who bought the lot in December 1860. His widow sold it in 1863, and it passed through several owners before a Porter descendant, M.C. York, bought it at auction in 1902. York, a dry goods merchant, founded the Standard Telephone Company in 1904, and the town's first telephone line ran between this house and his downtown store. The house is valued as a largely unaltered example of late antebellum carpenter-builder work and as the only large Greek Revival structure remaining in Clarkesville. It remains in good condition.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"John Porter","architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as virtually unaltered and in good condition; used as a vacation or summer residence.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:40.764608-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/82002441.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82002441/11cea3d52f-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82002441/11cea3d52f-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Jerrye & Roy Klotz, MD","credit_html":"Jerrye & Roy Klotz, MD, CC BY-SA 3.0, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:PORTER-YORK_HOUSE,_HABERSHAM_COUNTY,_GA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93206214","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q134362917"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/habersham-county/porter-york-house-82002441/"}
