Washington Street on the square in Clarkesville, Habersham County, Georgia, built about 1890 and built into a steep hillside.","why_significant":"The building is a good example of late-Victorian small-town commercial architecture in Georgia and has an exceptional degree of integrity. It is also significant for commerce, having housed downtown shops and offices, including those of the turn-of-the-century physician Dr. J.B. Jackson. In communications, it held the local telephone company's switchboard on the second floor from the early 20th century to the 1950s.","narrative":"Built around 1890 on the square in Clarkesville, this brick commercial building at 710 N. Washington Street rises three stories at the rear and two at the front because it was built into a steep hillside. Its front facade is nearly intact, with wood-framed plate glass storefronts, wood and glass entry doors, double-hung sash windows under segmental brick arches, and a cornice of corbelled and angled brick with a recessed signboard. A metal awning replaced an original balcony in the early 20th century. Shortly after 1900, Dr. J.B. Jackson, a local physician, bought the building and kept his office on one side of the ground floor, while a meat market occupied the other side. The Standard Telephone Company placed the Clarkesville exchange switchboard upstairs until the mid-1950s. Over the years the building housed various shops and offices. It is recognized for its architecture, its role in the commerce of the square, and its place in local telephone history.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Late Victorian commercial","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as vacant and in fair condition at the time of the survey form.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:41.124771-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/82002434.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82002434/aab1fe7630-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82002434/aab1fe7630-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Jerrye & Roy Klotz, MD","credit_html":"Jerrye & Roy Klotz, MD, CC BY-SA 3.0, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:JACKSON_BUILDING,_HABERSHAM_COUNTY.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"100006669","name":"Clarkesville Downtown Square Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/georgia/clarkesville-downtown-square-historic-district-100006669/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93206200","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q134362080"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/habersham-county/jackson-building-82002434/"}
