Baron.","why_significant":"The building is a good local example of turn-of-the-century small-town commercial architecture, with materials and facade design typical of late Victorian commercial buildings in Georgia. It is one of only five surviving historic commercial buildings on the square. It also housed retail businesses and the post office, and M.C. York started Clarkesville's telephone system here.","narrative":"Built around the turn of the century on the square in Clarkesville, this rectangular brick commercial building was first a dry goods store owned by V.C. Baron and later by M.C. York. Like its neighbors, it is set into a steep hillside, so it shows two stories to the square and three at the rear. The second floor keeps its robust hood moldings, corbeled brick cornice and simple brick brackets, while the street level has been remodeled and a balcony was removed in 1975. Over time it held a post office, a feed and seed store, a dime store, a factory outlet, a photography studio and a law office upstairs. It is one of just five historic commercial buildings left on the square and a good local example of late Victorian commercial design. It also has a place in local communications history: York ran a telephone line between his business and home, which grew into the Standard Telephone Company, now serving a seven-county area.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Romanesque-styled commercial brick building (late Victorian commercial)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as in good condition; in use as a photography studio at the time of the survey. The street-level floor was remodeled and the balcony removed in 1975, while the second floor remains intact.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:40.390139-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/82002426.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82002426/aabe5a8835-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82002426/aabe5a8835-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Jerrye & Roy Klotz, MD","credit_html":"Jerrye & Roy Klotz, MD, CC BY-SA 3.0, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:BARON-YORK_BUILDING,_HABERSHAM_COUNTY.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"100006669","name":"Clarkesville Downtown Square Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/georgia/clarkesville-downtown-square-historic-district-100006669/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93206180","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q134360380"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/habersham-county/baron-york-building-82002426/"}
