Lloyd Preacher.","why_significant":"The building is a good example of the large residential hotels built in Atlanta in the early twentieth century, with fine colored terra-cotta ornamentation. It was a major commercial venture in what was then a suburban area and housed new professional and business families. It is also tied to Asa G. Candler, Jr., who had it built and kept his real estate offices and a suite there.","narrative":"Built in 1924-1925 at the corner of Ponce de Leon and Highland Avenues in Atlanta, this nine-story, H-shaped hotel was designed as a luxury apartment building. It has a reinforced concrete frame, scored cast concrete on the lower floors, red brick above, and a ninth floor decorated with red, blue and green terra cotta. Architect G. Lloyd Preacher, who moved his office from Augusta to Atlanta in 1922, designed it. Asa G. Candler, Jr., through his Briarcliff Investment Company, had it built and later moved his company offices there. He kept a suite on the top floor and lived there until his death in 1953. The Depression and a shift in fashionable development away from nearby Druid Hills turned the apartments into a commercial hotel, listed as the Briarcliff Hotel in 1938. It was recently rehabilitated as housing for the elderly. Its significance rests on architecture, commerce and local history.","period_of_significance":"1924-1925","architect_builder":"Architect: G.
