Washington Street, on the corner of Pine Avenue in downtown Albany, Dougherty County, Georgia, built in 1923-1924 as a department store in the Second Renaissance Revival style.","why_significant":"The nomination argues it is a fine and rare example of Second Renaissance Revival architecture in a small south Georgia city and a good example of an early twentieth century department store. It also housed Albany's largest and most exclusive department store, founded in 1896, which led modern merchandising in the city during a period of rapid growth.","narrative":"Rosenberg Brothers Department Store is a three-story brick building on a corner in downtown Albany, Georgia, completed in 1923-1924. Designed by Albany architect J.T. Murphy and built by contractor J.C. Hind, it follows the Second Renaissance Revival style, with tan-glazed brick, limestone trim, round-arched ground-floor openings and a balustraded parapet. It was modeled on a department store in Athens that owner Jacob Rosenberg had visited. Inside, a brass pneumatic cashier tube system made by the Lamson Company remains intact. The store grew from a branch Jacob Rosenberg opened in 1896, which used a one-price plan instead of bargaining. The present building was erected in two stages so business could continue during construction. It reflected Albany's prosperity as a rail-served trade center of southwest Georgia. The store operated here until 1978, and the building was later used for storage. It was listed for its architecture and its role in local commerce.","period_of_significance":"1923-1924","architect_builder":"J.T. Murphy, architect; J.C.
