Snow.","why_significant":"The nomination argues significance in architecture, commerce and local history. It is a good, relatively high-style example of Georgian Revival commercial design in a small Georgia city and the largest Georgian Revival building in Albany. It was one of two major hotels built in the 1920s to serve railroad-driven travel, and it was a center of Albany social life in the 1920s and 1930s.","narrative":"Rising six stories on a corner lot in downtown Albany, this hotel opened in 1925 and was designed by Atlanta architect Raymond C. Snow. Its concrete-and-steel frame carries terra cotta block faced with tapestry brick in Flemish bond, with Dutch Cross brickwork at the top floor. Georgian Revival details include stone quoins, a Doric porch, fanlit doors, a broken pediment over the main entrance and a pedimented parapet with a garlanded cartouche. Later additions around 1948 expanded the ballroom and added office space. The hotel was built when Albany served as the railroad hub of southwest Georgia, with seven rail lines, and it catered to tourists, business people and traveling salespeople. It replaced part of an older wooden hotel and cost $425,000, the largest building permit issued in Albany in 1925. Its restaurant and ballroom made it a social center during the 1920s and 1930s. It is the only Georgian Revival hotel in the city and the better preserved of Albany's two major 1920s hotels.","period_of_significance":"1925","architect_builder":"Architect: Raymond C.
