It was the largest and most impressive building of its era in Statesboro and the city's only surviving historic hotel from that time. It served as a center of commercial activity and social life in the early twentieth century.","narrative":"Built in 1905 at 50 East Main Street in Statesboro, this three-story hotel is made of terra cotta block with a brick veneer and a Neoclassical front porch. It was designed by Savannah architect Julian deBruyn Kops and built by local contractor A.J. Franklin. Local business and civic leaders organized the Statesboro Hotel Company to finance it, and it opened within the same year. Its location lay between the railroad depots and the county courthouse. In 1910 a Drummers' Building was added behind it for traveling salesmen to display goods, and a rear addition followed in 1935. The lobby, parlors and dining room keep Neoclassical detailing, pressed-tin ceilings and heart pine floors. The hotel was a center of commerce and social life, hosting civic club meetings, balls and dinners. It is the city's only surviving historic hotel from the period, and the hexagonal paving blocks of its front sidewalk are the last of their kind on East Main Street. At listing it stood vacant, and the owner planned restoration of the facade and first floor.","period_of_significance":"1900-","architect_builder":"A.J.
