It is also significant for town settlement, since it was built for Luther Locke, son of Lockeford's founder, and his business and water system helped develop the town.","narrative":"Standing at the main intersection of Lockeford, this two-story brick commercial building was erected between 1883 and 1888 for Luther Locke, who ran Locke's Meat Market on the ground floor while his family lived upstairs. A five-bay wooden oriel tower with a zinc hexagonal dome marks the corner entrance, and the brick facades carry an asymmetrical pattern of blind and open arches with keystones and pilasters. The design is attributed to Stockton architect Charles Beasley, whose work often featured corner towers, bracketed cornices and arched windows. Alterations came mainly in the late 1930s, when a porch was removed and new windows were added, with a shed and small addition following later. Luther Locke was the son of town founder Dean Jewett Locke. In 1888 he added a water tank and began a town water system. The bricks were made from local clay by Chinese laborers. The building recalls Lockeford's role as a supply town on the route from Stockton to the mines.","period_of_significance":"1883-1888","architect_builder":"Charles Beasley (attributed)","architectural_style":"Commercial architecture of the 1880s","criteria":[],"status_note":"Occupied; first floor interior altered with new room divisions, upstairs residential spaces largely intact, and described by a local society as kept in excellent repair.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:31.351068-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_CA/82002253.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82002253/6b489c5720-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82002253/6b489c5720-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Jon Roanhaus","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Locke%27s_Meat_Market_NRHP_82002253_San_Joaquin_County,_CA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Jon Roanhaus</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Locke%27s_Meat_Market_NRHP_82002253_San_Joaquin_County,_CA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/123861399","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Locke%27s_Meat_Market","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q65120899"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/california/san-joaquin-county/lockes-meat-market-82002253/"}
