Krafft.","why_significant":"The nomination calls it an excellent, largely unaltered example of late-19th-century carpenter gothic church architecture, modeled on the western facade of Chartres Cathedral. It was a pioneer Lutheran congregation on the West Coast and a center of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod in the West. It was also an early hub of German cultural life and served as the First Reserve Hospital after the 1906 earthquake and fire.","narrative":"Saint Paulus Lutheran Church occupies the corner of Eddy and Gough Streets near San Francisco's Civic Center. Designed by architect Julius E. Krafft and built by contractor C. Bluns, it was begun in 1892 and dedicated in February 1894. The cross-shaped carpenter gothic building has a brick basement, a redwood superstructure, a slate roof and three slender spires, the tallest rising 55 meters. A large rose window crowns the triple-arched entrance, and the chancel window includes rare German glass. Krafft apparently drew on the western facade of Chartres Cathedral. The congregation, founded in 1867 under Pastor Jacob Buehler, became a leader of West Coast Lutheranism and a center of German-speaking community life, with a parochial school begun in 1872. After the 1906 earthquake, the church was spared from demolition by dynamite when a hydrant worked, and its lower rooms served as a hospital for thousands of injured people. A 1940 fire damaged the roof, but the building was restored.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":"Julius E. Krafft, architect; C.
