It was a major manufacturing site in Napa County, first making wine presses, then housing an early electric light and power plant, and later a glove factory.","narrative":"Built in 1884 at 1345 Railroad Avenue in St. Helena, this two-story foundry building has loadbearing walls of native fieldstone and a trapezoidal plan. Its north facade has three arched doorways and seven arched windows with rusticated surrounds, and a keystone inscribed \"TDG, 1884\" for the partners Taylor, Duckworth and Genung. The firm made wine presses and grape boxes for the local wine region, and in 1884 it was described as the leading establishment of its kind in Napa County. In the late 1880s the building also held the St. Helena Electric Light and Power Company plant, an early attempt at commercial electrification. In 1906 it became California Glove Factory #2, which operated until the early 1920s. Later it served as a mushroom operation and a chicken hatchery, giving it the name The Hatchery. Since the 1960s the interior has been remodeled for a restaurant, galleries and offices, while the exterior remains largely unchanged and sits among other surviving stone commercial buildings.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":"Taylor, Duckworth & Genung, Contractors; Stonemasons","architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Occupied and in commercial use; the interior was adapted to house a restaurant, offices and an art gallery, and the exterior is largely unchanged.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:31.980658-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_CA/82002216.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82002216/e2dbcad80f-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82002216/e2dbcad80f-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Eugene Zelenko","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:USA-St._Helena-Taylor,_Duckworth_and_Company_Foundry_Building-5.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Eugene Zelenko</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:USA-St._Helena-Taylor,_Duckworth_and_Company_Foundry_Building-5.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/123860106","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q133319774"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/california/napa-county/taylor-duckworth-and-company-foundry-building-82002216/"}
