The surviving buildings are a ranch house begun c.1890 and enlarged c.1905, a stone Cheese Barn built c.1910, and a Horse Barn.","why_significant":"The ranch is a link to the era when dairying was a major part of Napa County's economy, especially in Coombsville, and to the influence of Swiss German and Swiss Italian settlers. Architecturally, the ranch house shows a plain saltbox farmhouse growing into a Queen Anne-influenced residence as the family prospered. The stone Cheese Barn shows the settlers' skill with native stone.","narrative":"Kreuzer Ranch is a surviving piece of Napa County's dairy past, set at the end of Kreuzer Lane in the open Coombsville farmland east of Napa. The remaining buildings are a ranch house, a Horse Barn and a Cheese Barn. The house began around 1890 as a one-and-a-half-story saltbox and was enlarged about 1905 with a two-story wing influenced by the Queen Anne style, with stained glass windows and sawn trim. John Joe Kreuzer, a Swiss German stonemason who settled in the county in 1898, built the Cheese Barn of stone quarried on the property. It housed a creamery that sold butter and later a cheese factory that shipped long distances. At its largest the ranch covered 1,100 acres. The cheese business ended during World War II. The ranch reflects the Swiss German and Swiss Italian influence on local agriculture and stonework, and on how a utilitarian farmhouse grew more elaborate as a farm prospered.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899, 1900- (specific date 1905)","architect_builder":"Original buildings unknown; additions: Kreuzers","architectural_style":"Saltbox ranch house with Queen Anne influence (c.1905 addition)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Work in progress to restore the ranch house exterior to its c.1905 appearance; structural work needed on the Cheese Barn stone walls; ranch house to be rehabilitated for residential use.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:32.326493-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_CA/82002214.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/123860040","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":null},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/california/napa-county/kreuzer-ranch-82002214/"}
