It was the central developmental building of Shafter, where the town grew up around it after its construction. It is also one of the few such depots to survive the railroad's removal of outmoded buildings.","narrative":"Built in 1917 by Santa Fe employees, this two-story wood-frame railroad depot in Shafter, California, followed the railway's Standard Combination Frame Depot No. 2A plan, first drawn in 1911 and modified in 1913. The design served freight, passenger and express traffic. Shafter was then a young farming colony, and the depot encouraged growth as the town expanded around it. The railroad later altered the building, enclosing the porch in 1938 and expanding the ticket office in 1927. After the railroad abandoned it in 1978, the Shafter Historical Society took it over in 1979 and raised funds to move it three blocks to a new foundation in March 1980. Restoration to its 1917 appearance, including replacement of porch columns and loading docks, was under way, and it was to house a museum and offices. The nomination presents it as the central developmental building in Shafter and as a rare survivor among early twentieth-century depots.","period_of_significance":"1900-","architect_builder":"Santa Fe Railroad","architectural_style":"Standard Combination Frame Depot Number 2A","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Moved in March 1980 to a new site and being restored to its 1917 appearance for use as a museum and offices; condition listed as good, altered, and moved.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:31.399144-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_CA/82002187.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82002187/5819864c12-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82002187/5819864c12-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 3.0","author":"Bobak Ha'Eri","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:2010-1227-SantaFe-Shafter.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Bobak Ha'Eri</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:2010-1227-SantaFe-Shafter.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/123858867","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shafter_station_(Atchison,_Topeka_and_Santa_Fe_Railway)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14683914"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/california/kern-county/santa-fe-passenger-and-freight-depot-82002187/"}
