Two wooden bungalows were moved to the site in 1917.","why_significant":"The nomination argues it is one of the last institutional works of Ernest Coxhead and the only one of his four schools still standing. It is also a fine early example of the California \"outdoor\" school, with courtyards, arcades and operable windows, and part of a 1915 Berkeley school building program.","narrative":"Garfield Intermediate School is a one-story, wood-frame Spanish Colonial Revival building at 1414 Walnut Street in Berkeley, built in 1915 to designs by Ernest Coxhead. Classrooms ring wide arcaded corridors with vaulted ceilings, and two enclosed courtyards meant as outdoor classrooms flank a 400-seat auditorium that opens onto them through French windows. Cement plaster covers the walls, red clay tile roofs most of the building, and classical entrances carry friezes of laurel leaves and cherub faces. It was one of five schools that prominent Bay Area architects designed on limited budgets as part of a 1915 city building program. Coxhead designed four schools in his career, and this is the only one that survives, making it one of few of his buildings left in the East Bay. It is also regarded as a sophisticated example of the California outdoor school. Later changes include a composition roof over the auditorium and two relocated 1913 bungalows.","period_of_significance":"1915","architect_builder":"Ernest Coxhead","architectural_style":"Spanish Colonial Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Occupied and in fair condition; plaster has fallen in places, the auditorium roof was altered, and the bungalows are in poor condition. It has served as the school district administration building.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:31.396412-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_CA/82002160.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82002160/83a28377d7-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82002160/83a28377d7-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Sanfranman59","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Garfield_Intermediate_School_(Berkeley,_CA).JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Sanfranman59</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Garfield_Intermediate_School_(Berkeley,_CA).JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/123858226","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Garfield_Intermediate_School","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q123279378"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/california/alameda-county/garfield-intermediate-school-82002160/"}
