Wyeth's brickyard. It is a five-bay Greek Revival/Italianate building.","why_significant":"The house is a well-preserved relic of the North Cambridge brick industry, which used glacial clay near Alewife Brook to supply growing New England cities. It is tied to Nathaniel Wyeth, a local entrepreneur central to establishing brickmaking in the area. It is also an excellent, largely intact example of its type, with much of the interior surviving.","narrative":"Built in 1848 at 336 Rindge Avenue in North Cambridge, this five-bay brick cottage served as the superintendent's house for Nathaniel J. Wyeth's brickyard. Combining Greek Revival and Italianate features, it keeps its original sidelight entrance, granite sills and lintels, and corbelled brickwork in the gables, and much of the interior remains intact. The house is listed as a rare surviving reminder of the local brick industry. Clay left by glaciers beneath the Great Swamp near Alewife Brook had been used for bricks since colonial times, and demand from fast-growing mid-nineteenth-century cities led to an industrial complex of brickyards, drying kilns and clay pits. Wyeth, a local entrepreneur who also helped finance a railroad extension in 1840 to carry ice from Fresh Pond, opened his own brickyard in the 1840s. The clay ran out by the mid-twentieth century, and the yards were abandoned. The house remains a residence and a symbol of brickmaking in Cambridge history.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Greek Revival/Italianate","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Present use is residential; the form describes the structure as excellently preserved and not altered or moved.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:53.699781-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/92/7905/63790592/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/82001987.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82001987/a7f64a64f6-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82001987/a7f64a64f6-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Daderot","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wyeth_Brickyard_Superintendent%27s_House,_336_Rindge_Avenue,_Cambridge,_MA_-_IMG_4658.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Daderot</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wyeth_Brickyard_Superintendent%27s_House,_336_Rindge_Avenue,_Cambridge,_MA_-_IMG_4658.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63790592","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wyeth_Brickyard_Superintendent%27s_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q8039736"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/wyeth-brickyard-superintendents-house-82001987/"}
