It was recorded as a building with the Cambridge Historical Commission in 1969.","why_significant":"It was the first of four brick houses built by the Sands family, who ran brickyards in Cambridge for more than seventy years, so it is tied to the early brick industry. It is also one of the few surviving Federal period brick houses in Cambridge. The reviewer judged it locally significant under criteria A and C.","narrative":"Built in 1839 at 145 Elm Street in Cambridge, this brick house was the first of four constructed by the Sands family, who operated brickyards in the city for over seventy years. Ivory and John Sands entered the brick trade in the 1830s, working clay beds along the Miller's River that were among the first in Cambridge to be commercially worked. The house is late Federal in form but shows the approaching Greek Revival in its high-pitched gable roof. Its facade has a typical five-bay layout with a center entrance, reflecting a two-room, center-hall plan. Window openings have sandstone lintels and sills, an early use of that material in Cambridge. Other features include an angled brick dentil course at the cornice and a demi-lune window in each gable. The house was recognized as locally significant for its link to the city's brick industry and as one of the few surviving Federal period brick houses in Cambridge. It remains in residential use and is unaltered.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Architect anonymous; original owner Ivory Sands","architectural_style":"Late Federal - Greek Revival influence","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Present use is residential; the form states it is unaltered and has not been moved.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:54.231841-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/94/7905/63790594/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/82001976.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82001976/c7c751ad72-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82001976/c7c751ad72-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Daderot","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ivory_Sands_House,_145_Elm_Street,_Cambridge,_MA_-_IMG_4576.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Daderot</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ivory_Sands_House,_145_Elm_Street,_Cambridge,_MA_-_IMG_4576.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63790594","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ivory_Sands_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6099698"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/sands-ivory-house-82001976/"}
