Walls are wood and brick.","why_significant":"The block is described as the oldest known standing structure in East Cambridge and the only survivor of an unknown number of buildings put up directly by the Lechmere Point Corporation. It first appears in a 1821 sale to Governor Christopher Gore. The reviewer found it significant despite alterations, for the early development of the area, under Criterion C.","narrative":"This row of four attached houses at 45-51 Gore Street and 25 Third Street in East Cambridge dates from before 1821 and is Federal in style, built of wood and brick. It was erected by the Lechmere Point Corporation, a development company, and is the oldest structure known to survive in East Cambridge and the only one left of an unknown number the corporation built directly. A real estate record from 1821 shows the corporation selling it to Governor Christopher Gore, who held stock in the company and speculated in local land himself. The end houses are entered through central doorways, while the two middle houses have side-hall plans entered from Gore Street. Only the unit facing Gore Street remains substantially unchanged, with a pedimented gable and a deeply recessed center entrance in an otherwise plain brick wall. The house at 49 Gore gained arched windows and an extra story, and 51 Gore received a mansard roof. Despite these changes, the block was recognized for its place in the early development of the area. It remains residential.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Lechmere Point Corporation (original owner and builder); architect unknown","architectural_style":"Federal","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Present use is residential; the block has been altered at different times, with an added story and arched windows at 49 Gore and a mansard roof at 51 Gore.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:54.563376-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/16/7905/63790516/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/82001957.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82001957/d6c242f3e6-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82001957/d6c242f3e6-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Tim Pierce","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Lechmere_Point_Corporation_Houses_2.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Tim Pierce</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Lechmere_Point_Corporation_Houses_2.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63790516","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lechmere_Point_Corporation_Houses","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6511622"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/lechmere-point-corporation-houses-82001957/"}
