It was the mansion of the last important Cambridge estate to be subdivided for suburban development. In 1915 the grounds were divided, and the main house and its ell were moved to their present locations at 22 and 36 Larch Road. Architect Alexander Wadsworth Longfellow, Jr. carried out alterations at that time. The exterior has a low hip roof, a delicate cornice with fretted dentils and mutules, and an entrance with an elliptical fanlight and sidelights under a porch of fluted columns with papyrus leaf capitals. Inside, a graceful stair rises in a semi-circle and molded plaster friezes cap the doors. The interior is considered the best surviving Federal period work in Cambridge. The house remains a residence.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Architect unknown; altered in 1915 by architect Alexander Wadsworth Longfellow, Jr.","architectural_style":"Georgian (with Federal period detailing)","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Present use is residential; the house and its ell were moved and altered in 1915 when the grounds were subdivided.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:54.341323-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/26/7905/63790526/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/82001956.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82001956/05f1e04375-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82001956/05f1e04375-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Daderot","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:The_Larches,_22_Larch_Road,_Cambridge,_MA_-_IMG_4278.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Daderot</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:The_Larches,_22_Larch_Road,_Cambridge,_MA_-_IMG_4278.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63790526","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Larches_(Cambridge,_Massachusetts)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7745490"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/larches-the-82001956/"}
