The Henderson family were the most renowned carriage builders in North Cambridge. The building is also known for its huge mass. The reviewer recommended listing under Criterion A for associations with area development.","narrative":"Massachusetts Avenue in North Cambridge holds a five-story brick building that once stored carriages for one of the area's best-known makers. Built in 1892 to designs by Charles Park of Boston, the repository measures 218 feet long and 85 feet wide. It uses mill construction with some Queen Anne influence, and its corner tower has since been removed. The Henderson family began with Robert Henderson, a blacksmith who opened a smithy in 1841 and built a small carriage factory in 1862 with his two sons. In 1869 the family erected what was then the largest industrial building in North Cambridge on this site. That structure burned in 1892 and was immediately replaced by the present building. While used as a carriage repository, its four upper floors held an estimated 2000 carriages. The ground floor has remained commercial. It is one of two surviving buildings linked to Cambridge's carriage industry.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Charles Park","architectural_style":"Mill construction with Queen Anne influence","criteria":["A"],"status_note":"Present use is commercial; the first story continues to be used commercially.
