Lopez Avenue in East Cambridge, Massachusetts, built about 1830 and moved to this site about 1900 from an unknown location.","why_significant":"It is an unusual survivor of the first period of East Cambridge's development and one of few surviving examples of Federal frame construction in the area. Its simple window moldings, doorway and 6-over-6 sash windows show the type of architecture that once typified the neighborhood. A sensitive restoration has made it a local landmark.","narrative":"A modest wood-frame house at 42 Edward J. Lopez Avenue preserves a piece of East Cambridge's earliest residential development. Built around 1830 in the Late Georgian-Federal manner, it was moved to its present lot about 1900 from a site that records have not identified. The move probably relates to construction of part of the court house complex or development near the Broad Canal, and because access to the area was limited, the house cannot have travelled far. It is a simple worker's cottage of a type once common in the neighborhood, with 6-over-6 sash windows, plain window moldings and a restrained doorway. Similar houses date from roughly 1810 to 1830, and few remain. A restoration sympathetic to the building's origins has made it a local landmark. It is still used as a residence. Reviewers recognized it as one of the few surviving examples of its type in East Cambridge, which supported its listing for architectural significance.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Late Georgian-Federal","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Used as a residence; described as restored in a way sympathetic to its origins.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:53.579774-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/48/7905/63790548/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/82001928.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82001928/5d92d32dfa-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82001928/5d92d32dfa-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Tim Pierce","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Cambridge_MA_42_Edward_J._Lopez_Avenue.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Tim Pierce</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Cambridge_MA_42_Edward_J._Lopez_Avenue.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63790548","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Building_at_42_Edward_J._Lopez_Avenue","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4986573"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/building-at-42-edward-j-lopez-avenue-82001928/"}
