It served as an early tavern on the Post Road, where the Committee of Correspondence, Inspection and Safety met and the militia mustered. Restored, it is an excellent example of eighteenth-century Connecticut Valley design, and the site may hold historic archaeological remains.","narrative":"Daniel Fowler was licensed to open a tavern in Westfield in 1761, the date generally given for this three-story timber-frame building on Main Street near the Little and Westfield Rivers. It has clapboard siding, a broad gambrel roof, a central chimney, and a symmetrical five-bay facade. During the Revolutionary period the Committee of Correspondence, Inspection and Safety, on which Fowler served, met here, and the militia mustered at the tavern. Townspeople celebrated the war's end there. The tavern lodged travelers along the Post Road until about 1830, when a canal and the westward shift of the town center reduced its trade. It then became a residence, apart from 1885-1916, when a cigar-making business operated on the premises. The entry doorway was sold to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1916; a careful restoration later reproduced it exactly. The building is valued as an example of Connecticut Valley design, and its site may contain archaeological remains.","period_of_significance":"1700-1799","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Eighteenth-century Connecticut Valley design (described in an endorsement letter as Georgian)","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Restored under a restoration certified by the Secretary of the Interior; the form lists the building as occupied, in fair condition, and used as a private residence.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:57.719437-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/5/7953/63795305/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/82001914.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82001914/2263858791-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82001914/2263858791-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"TM01001","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Fowler_Tavern_-_Westfield,_MA.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">TM01001</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Fowler_Tavern_-_Westfield,_MA.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63795305","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Landlord_Fowler_Tavern","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14715660"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/hampden-county/landlord-fowler-tavern-82001914/"}
